Dr. John Maszka has lived, studied and taught in seven countries on five different continents. So, although he carries a US passport, John considers himself a citizen of the world.
Dr. Maszka received his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in History at the University of Wisconsin. He holds an M.A. in Media and Mass Communication and an M.A. in Political Science– both from Northern Illinois University (NIU). Dr. Maszka earned his Doctorate in Philosophy (Ph.D.) in International Relations from Bournemouth University in the UK.
Dr. Maszka’s research is focused on terrorism, violent extremism and systemic change in the international order. John has spent most of his summers and sabbaticals working as a military trainer in high conflict areas. In addition to his own personal experiences with violent extremist attacks and school shootings, John has interviewed high-ranking members of the IRA, the Branch Davidians and has conducted extensive field research throughout the MENA region, Eurasia and Southeast Asia.
Dr. Maszka is the author of five published books (including a political thriller) and a dozen journal articles. Dr. Maszka is also a contributing author of The Handbook on Terrorism and Counter Terrorism Post-9/11. He is currently finishing a book on the rise of China and the changing international order, and he is editing a volume in the series International Perspectives on Inclusive Education.
Dr. Maszka served as Director of International Relations at the International University of Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan, Department Chair of Liberal Studies at the Higher Colleges of Technology in the UAE, and he has held various academic appointments at universities around the world.
In his personal time, John enjoys spending time with his family, traveling, reading and dreaming up the characters in his next novel. John is also an accomplished musician and licensed composer with Broadcast Music Inc. (BMI). He ran a successful independent record label in the Chicago area for ten years where he worked with world-class musicians in a wide variety of genres, from jazz to rock, world beat and punk.
